Skills Every Engineering Fresher Should Learn Before College

Don’t feel pressured to learn everything, but learning a handful of skills will definitely give you an edge and make starting easier for you.

Skills Worth Acquiring

• Learn One Programming Language – Learn either Python or C well enough to understand variables, loops, functions, and basic programming problem-solving concepts andNow, programming is required in all disciplines.
•  Fluency With The Computer And Digital Tools – File management, ability to install programs, knowledge of Google Workspace (Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides) and other productivity software, such as Notion and Obsidian.
•  Basics About AI And Working With Data – Basic understanding of capabilities and limitations of modern AI. Learning how to write simple prompts in ChatGPT and using AI to aid learning instead of avoiding it.

 

Productivity & Studying Skills

•  Touch Typing – Try to type at least 50–60 wpm. In four years, faster typing adds dozens of hours to the number of assignments, reports, and programming you'll complete.
•  Time Management - The skills to organize your week, prioritizes, and use a calendar or a task management application to stay on top of labs, deadlines, and studying.

 

Note- Taking and Self-Learning Techniques would include summarizing lectures using your own words, challenging yourself with the formulas, studying on your own through YouTube, MOOCs, and documentation.

Professional Communication and Skills

1. Effective Communication is all about working to develop your skills in communicating ideas using well-built sentences and writing good emails/reports.
2.  Basic Knowledge About Working as Part of a Team is all about You cannot only be concerned about yourself as an engineer but should know how to listen to others, share tasks among the team members, give feedback, and solve minor problems amicably.
3.  Online Presence and Networking means creating a basic LinkedIn profile and connecting it to universities and firms while starting to build a portfolio for the future.

Mindset and Personal Skills

• Problem Solving Mindset – Approach challenging problems as puzzles andanalyze complex problems into simpler sub-problems, use different techniques for solving them, and embrace making mistakes.
• Curiosity and Flexibility – Modern technology develops quickly. Do not limit yourself to just one way or tool but learn about everything else.
• Basic Awareness of Finances and Goals - Know what financial means you have at your disposal, set clear academic and professional goals for every semester, and check them from time to time.
• You do not have to know everything listed above before entering university. Choose 3 or 4 skills – such as Python, typing, time management and communication – and work on them.
